Meeting is held on attempt to expel two African-American students from New England Conservatory dormitory.
1890
Sponsored by the Colored National League, the meeting is held at the Charles A.M.E. Church to protest the school’s attempt to move Maud Cuney and Florida Desverney out of the dormitory. Desverney withdraws from the school, but Cuney remains in the dormitory for the rest of the year. During the controversy, her father, a Texas politician, writes to the school, “You request my cooperation in surrendering to the demands of prejudice, by withdrawing my daughter; I cannot help you. Ask Massachusetts; ask her mighty dead; ask her living sons and daughters. They will co-operate with you, if you cannot solve the problem, and render your Institution illustrious throughout all ages.”
